Our students often ask us about what they can do to continue learning Spanish after the classes. We don’t have a unique answer, since the ways to learn a language are multiple and they depend a lot on the type of student you are and the time you have to practice.
However, a very convenient option are the apps to your phone. Here you have some pros and cons about them:

However, a very convenient option are the apps to your phone. Here you have some pros and cons about them:
Pros
- You can practice your Spanish wherever and whenever you want. You only need your cell phone and earphones. They are perfect to take advantage of this wasted commuting time, for example. Actually, we know that some people even use them when they are in the bathroom! :D
- Most of them are free (like those in this article) or very cheap. You won’t have to spend extra money on your extra study!
- You will be able to practice the contents studied in the class. They are good to revise your vocabulary or practice how to make simple sentences.
- Normally, they based on repetition so, of course, you will learn some things. They are good to automate some contents.
- Finally, they are also based on games so most of them are really addictive. YOu will get hooked on Spanish!
Cons
- Normally, they are good for basic and pre-intermediate levels. Don’t expect to get an advance level of Spanish. As we said before, they are good to revisee basic contents but they don’t work so well on upper-intermediate or advance levels.
- They are very focused on the vocabulary but, in general, they don’t give you great explanations about grammar, for example.
- They forget speaking and writing skills. Some of them include pronunciation exercises but, obviously, this is not enough if we want to speak Spanish.

Duolingo
It is one of the most popular apps and we always recommend it to our students. Why? Because we think it is pretty useful to revise your vocabulary and to start working on sentence building. Besides, if you have an iPhone, you will be able to practice basic conversation skills with its bots! Aaand: some months ago they started a Spanish podcast, so you can also work on your listening comprehension.

Memrise
Useful to increase our vocabulary. It could be a bit repetitive, but it is based on the combination of the words with funny messages and pictures helping you to remember them better. They also have a section where you can listen the pronunciation of the words by some native speakers. Bad things: you only can learn Spanish from English.

Babbel
It is one of the apps with more classic interface, less game style. It is divided by levels and topics, so you can choose your level (from beginners to intermediate) or specific contents (included some specific grammar topics) that you want to revise. Thumbs up: it also has some cultural sections.

Rosetta stone
It is one of the most famous apps and one of the oldest. You will be able to learn Spanish from Spanish, that is, you will have all the interface in Spanish from the very beginning. They are based on the way you learn a language when you are a child. Full immersion! That’s great. They also distinguishes between Spanish from Latin America / Spain.
Bad things? Only a part of the app is free. If you want to continue learning, you have to pay.
